Hyperdrive Innovation eyes long-term growth post Covid-19

The commercial director of Sunderland-headquartered Hyperdrive Innovation has said that the company's continued production is a "great testament" to his team, with the firm also eyeing long-term growth following the Covid-19 crisis.

Hyperdrive designs, develops and manufactures lithium ion battery systems that power off-highway and material handling vehicles, as well as stationary and portable energy storage systems.

HYVE UK, which is an independent battery manufacturing facility launched by the company last year, is continuing production as normal, with Covid-19 safety measures having been introduced. Measures include split shifts, staggered break times and continuous disinfecting practices throughout the full facility, with those who can working from home.

The company has said that it has been able to fulfil customer orders, including from a large online grocery retailer.

Commercial director Stephen Irish told Insider how Hyperdrive has continued to help the retailer throughout the Covid-19 crisis.

He said: "It is facing unprecedented demand for its online shopping and delivery service with hundreds of thousands of active customers who have gone on to make weekly orders.

"Our bespoke power system for their fleet of autonomous guided vehicles used in fulfilment warehouses is enabling unseen customer demand to be met by minimising vehicle downtime and enabling 24/7 operations."

Irish hailed Hyperdrive's team for rising to the challenge posed by Covid-19, as well as the wider business community.

"It’s a great testament to our team that they’ve been able to rise in the face of a challenge, especially one of this magnitude.

"This strength can also be applied to the North East business community who have adapted to the changing circumstances. Kudos to those companies who have been able to support the NHS by manufacturing essential PPE."

The commercial director also highlighted the firm's growth plans, with the company "looking at a number of different international locations to open additional manufacturing facilities.

"We are also working with partners in entirely new sectors, where our technology and manufacturing capability can be applied to accelerate decarbonisation and deliver outstanding new products for new customers quickly.

"Our main aim is to develop and expand our technology and product roadmap. How the world generates, stores and distributes energy is a big challenge and we’re committed to innovating new and better technology that will benefit vehicles and machinery across multiple industries."
